Daopao (Chinese: \u9053\u888d ; pinyin: d\u00e0o p\u00e1o) or Taoist robe, was very popular and typical casual clothing in the Ming dynasty, which developed from an earlier garment called Zhe (\u8936 ; zh\u011b).<\/p>\n

Daopao is also one of the traditional costumes of Taoism.<\/p>\n

Daopao is a long outer garment with a crossed collar with a hidden Bai (\u6446 ; b\u01cei) on side of the garment.<\/p>\n

Daopao can be worn with a silk belt, cloth belt, or a large belt.<\/p>\n

Wide collar edges and Huling (collar guards) are usually added.<\/p>\n

Characteristics<\/h4>\n

1. The collar shape is Jiaoling Youren (\u4ea4\u9886\u53f3\u887d ; ji\u0101o l\u01d0ng y\u00f2u r\u00e8n), most collars have Huling (\u62a4\u9886 ; h\u00f9 l\u01d0ng)<\/p>\n

In the Qing dynasty, under the order of \u201cshaving the hair and changing costumes\u201d, the development of the daopao came to an end, and it can only be seen in some opera and monk costumes.<\/p>\n

Daopao was also imported from the Ming dynasty to Korea during the Joseon period, where it became known as dopo and was eventually localized in Korea and got its present form.<\/p>\n

Wear daopao<\/h4>\n

The good news is that the daopao is now returning to more popular use, and wearing one is the best way to preserve the garment.<\/p>\n

The daopao can be worn on a variety of occasions, either as a robe or as outerwear, as casual everyday wear, or as ceremonial clothing for festivals, and its attributes are often based on cloth trimmings or patterns.<\/p>\n

In general, daopao decorated with ornate patterns or decorated with Buzi (\u8865\u5b50 ; b\u01d4 zi) are often worn as a formal dress on ceremonial occasions. While daopao with less embroidery and relatively plain is more suitable for casual wear.<\/p>\n
