I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and to better understand parts of it, I translated sections that I found challenging. I also made notes (written in English) along the way to help deepen my understanding.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I\u2019m thrilled to share these notes with you! All rights remain with the original copyright holders.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"about\">About\u300a\u4e2d\u56fd\u5986\u675f\uff1a\u5927\u5510\u5973\u513f\u884c\u300b<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zhangruying.com\/en\/tag\/%e3%80%8a%e4%b8%ad%e5%9b%bd%e5%a6%86%e6%9d%9f%ef%bc%9a%e5%a4%a7%e5%94%90%e5%a5%b3%e5%84%bf%e8%a1%8c%e3%80%8b\">\u300a\u4e2d\u56fd\u5986\u675f\uff1a\u5927\u5510\u5973\u513f\u884c\u300b<\/a>(Zh\u014dng Gu\u00f3 Zhu\u0101ng Sh\u00f9: D\u00e0 T\u00e1ng N\u01da\u2019\u00e9r X\u00edng) by \u5de6\u4e18\u840c (Zu\u01d2 Qi\u016bm\u00e9ng) and \u672b\u6625 (M\u00f2 Ch\u016bn) attempts to reinterpret the true fashion of women\u2019s makeup and attire during the Tang dynasty, based on archaeological findings of Tang artifacts.<\/p>\n<p>It contrasts these findings with historical records and unearthed documents to reframe how the Tang people themselves might have viewed fashion in their time.<\/p>\n<p>The book covers from the Sui dynasty to the Five Dynasties, and is divided into four sections: Qi Luo \u7eee\u7f57 (clothing), Lin Lang \u7433\u7405 (accessories), <strong>Fen Dai \u7c89\u9edb (makeup)<\/strong>, and Ji Huan \u9afb\u9b1f (hairstyles).<\/p>\n<p>Each section carefully examines and details the names, styles, and combinations of different makeup and attire from that period.<\/p>\n<p>The book selects well-known historical figures, such as Yang Guifei, Wu Zetian, Shangguan Wan\u2019er, Nie Yinniang, Princess Tongchang, and others, based on existing archaeological findings, and makes informed speculations to restore the possible makeup and attire of these figures. The tomb\u2019s owner, Lu Tui, was married at the age of fifteen and died young at the age of twenty, leaving behind a daughter named Yingniang (\u82f1\u5a18 ; Y\u012bng Ni\u00e1ng) who was only three years old. The surface of the box was decorated with densely intertwined and luxurious floral patterns made from silver leaves using the Pingtuo technique. For example, in the third year of the Taihe era (829), in the tomb of Mr. Gao (\u9ad8\u5e9c\u541b ; G\u0101o f\u01d4 j\u016bn) and his wife, the burial items accompanying Lady Li (\u674e\u6c0f ; L\u01d0 sh\u00ec) still consisted of a complete set, including a gold-backed copper mirror, a small gold-plated silver box, a water bowl, and a small spoon.<\/p>\n<p>The character \u201c\u76d2\u201d (h\u00e9 ; box) is also written as \u201c\u5408\u201d (h\u00e9 ; fit\/suit, combine); thus, various small boxes containing powder and fragrant balm became tokens of affection exchanged between men and women, storing in their tiny space the boundless joys and sorrows of parting and reunion. At the end of\u300a\u957f\u6068\u6b4c\u300b(ch\u00e1ng h\u00e8n g\u0113) by Bai Juyi (\u767d\u5c45\u6613 ; B\u00e1i J\u016by\u00ec), it is written that Yang Guifei, who had become a goddess, sent her regards through a Daoist priest from Linqiong (\u4e34\u909b ; L\u00edn qi\u00f3ng), returning a keepsake of past love in the form of a small box and a golden hair ornament that had been split in two, to Emperor Xuanzong of Tang.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u56de\u5934\u4e0b\u671b\u4eba\u5bf0\u5904\uff0c\u4e0d\u89c1\u957f\u5b89\u89c1\u5c18\u96fe\u3002<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u60df\u5c06\u65e7\u7269\u8868\u6df1\u60c5\uff0c\u94bf\u5408\u91d1\u9497\u5bc4\u5c06\u53bb\u3002<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u9497\u7559\u4e00\u80a1\u5408\u4e00\u6247\uff0c\u9497\u64d8\u9ec4\u91d1\u5408\u5206\u94bf\u3002<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u4f46\u6559\u5fc3\u4f3c\u91d1\u94bf\u575a\uff0c\u5929\u4e0a\u4eba\u95f4\u4f1a\u76f8\u89c1\u3002<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Looking down upon the mortal world, Chang\u2019an is no longer in sight\u2014only a haze of dust remains.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Only with these old objects do I express deep feeling, the ornament box and the golden hairpin, which I entrust to be taken.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The hairpin is left with one joint, the box is divided on one side; the hairpin is broken from its gold, the box separated from its ornament.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>As long as our hearts are as steadfast as gold and its adornment, in Heaven or on Earth, surely we shall meet again.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the Tang dynasty legend\u300a\u67f3\u6c0f\u4f20\u300b(li\u01d4 sh\u00ec zhu\u00e0n), a similar scene is also recorded:<\/p>\n<p><em>During the Tianbao era, Han Yi (\u97e9\u7fca ; H\u00e1n Y\u00ec) had a beloved concubine with the surname Liu (\u67f3\u6c0f ; Li\u01d4 sh\u00ec). Due to the An Lushan Rebellion, the two were separated and only reunited after the war ended. Han Yi sent a poem to Liu:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u7ae0\u53f0\u67f3\uff0c\u7ae0\u53f0\u67f3\uff0c\u6614\u65e5\u9752\u9752\u4eca\u5728\u5426\uff1f\u7eb5\u4f7f\u957f\u6761\u4f3c\u65e7\u5782\uff0c\u4e5f\u5e94\u6500\u6298\u4ed6\u4eba\u624b\u3002<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Willow of Zhangtai, willow of Zhangtai,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Are you still as fresh and green as before?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Though your long branches still hang down as they once did,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Have they not now been plucked by another&#8217;s hand?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Liu replied to his poem:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u6768\u67f3\u679d\uff0c\u82b3\u83f2\u8282\uff0c\u6240\u6068\u5e74\u5e74\u8d60\u79bb\u522b\u3002\u4e00\u53f6\u968f\u98ce\u5ffd\u62a5\u79cb\uff0c\u7eb5\u4f7f\u541b\u6765\u5c82\u582a\u6298\uff01<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Willow branch, when fragrant in bloom,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>What I regret\u2014each year brings only parting.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>A single leaf falls, blown by the wind, suddenly announcing autumn,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Though you return, can I truly allow myself to be plucked once more?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It turned out that Liu had been forced to become the concubine of the foreign general Shazha Li (\u6c99\u5412\u5229 ; Sh\u0101zh\u0101 L\u00ec), so the two could no longer be together\u2014they could only secretly vow to meet again. When Liu&#8217;s carriage passed and she saw her former lover, she took a jade box wrapped in fine silk, filled it with fragrant balm, then from within the carriage handed it over and said:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u5f53\u901f\u6c38\u8bc0\uff0c\u539f\u7f6e\u8bda\u5ff5\u3002<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;We shall soon part forever\u2014may you keep this feeling sincerely.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Then she turned the carriage, waved her hand, her sleeve fluttering lightly, the carriage carrying away love and emotion, their final glance severed by the rising dust.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>She gave the jade box filled with fragrant balm to her lover as a farewell keepsake\u2014from that moment on, they never met again, but the scent of the powder would always remain with her beloved&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Han Wo once wrote a mixed-style poem titled\u300a\u7389\u5408\u300b(y\u00f9 h\u00e9), which more deeply expresses the sorrow and longing hidden within a small powder box.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u7f57\u56ca\u7ee3\u4e24\u51e4\u51f0\uff0c\u7389\u5408\u96d5\u53cc\u9e02\u9d92\u3002<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u4e2d\u6709\u5170\u818f\u6e0d\u7ea2\u8c46\uff0c\u6bcf\u56de\u62c8\u8457\u957f\u76f8\u5fc6\u3002<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u957f\u76f8\u5fc6\uff0c\u7ecf\u51e0\u6625\uff1f\u4eba\u6005\u671b\uff0c\u9999\u6c24\u6c32\u3002<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u5f00\u7f04\u4e0d\u89c1\u65b0\u4e66\u8ff9\uff0c\u5e26\u7c89\u72b9\u6b8b\u65e7\u6cea\u75d5\u3002<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A pouch embroidered with two phoenixes, a jade box carved with a pair of mandarin ducks.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Inside is stored orchid balm that moistens red beans; each time I take some, old memories come to mind.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Those memories\u2014how many springs have they passed? This double-sided box was carved with motifs of peony flowers with broken stems, joined by a small gold-plated clasp, and on its lid was engraved a pair of geese.
