Recently, I had the opportunity to read a book about traditional Chinese attire, especially for the Tang dynasty (618-907), written in Chinese, titled\u300a\u4e2d\u56fd\u5986\u675f\uff1a\u5927\u5510\u5973\u513f\u884c\u300bby \u5de6\u4e18\u840c and \u672b\u6625. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and to better understand parts of it, I translated sections that I found challenging. I also made notes along the way to help deepen my understanding.<\/p>\n<p>And I\u2019m excited to share these notes with you! All rights remain with the original copyright holders.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"about\">About\u300a\u4e2d\u56fd\u5986\u675f\uff1a\u5927\u5510\u5973\u513f\u884c\u300b<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zhangruying.com\/en\/tag\/%e3%80%8a%e4%b8%ad%e5%9b%bd%e5%a6%86%e6%9d%9f%ef%bc%9a%e5%a4%a7%e5%94%90%e5%a5%b3%e5%84%bf%e8%a1%8c%e3%80%8b\">\u300a\u4e2d\u56fd\u5986\u675f\uff1a\u5927\u5510\u5973\u513f\u884c\u300b<\/a>(Zh\u014dng Gu\u00f3 Zhu\u0101ng Sh\u00f9: D\u00e0 T\u00e1ng N\u01da\u2019\u00e9r X\u00edng) by \u5de6\u4e18\u840c (Zu\u01d2 Qi\u016bm\u00e9ng) and \u672b\u6625 (M\u00f2 Ch\u016bn) attempts to reinterpret the true fashion of women\u2019s makeup and attire during the Tang dynasty, based on archaeological findings of Tang artifacts.<\/p>\n<p>It contrasts these findings with historical records and unearthed documents to reframe how the Tang people themselves might have viewed fashion in their time.<\/p>\n<p>The book covers from the Sui dynasty to the Five Dynasties, and is divided into four sections: Qi Luo \u7eee\u7f57 (clothing), Lin Lang \u7433\u7405 (accessories), Fen Dai \u7c89\u9edb (makeup), and Ji Huan \u9afb\u9b1f (hairstyles).<\/p>\n<p>Each section carefully examines and details the names, styles, and combinations of different makeup and attire from that period.<\/p>\n<p>The book selects well-known historical figures, such as Yang Guifei, Wu Zetian, Shangguan Wan\u2019er, Nie Yinniang, Princess Tongchang, and others, based on existing archaeological findings, makes informed speculations to restore the possible makeup and attire of these figures. Their clothing and makeup were often merely the elegant and soft noise of a harem, with a lack of a strong voice in the silence of their own stories.<\/p>\n<p>However, the era in which Wu Zetian lived was an anomaly \u2014 women&#8217;s participation in politics was highly stimulating and pushed forward the development of cosmetics and fashion.<\/p>\n<p>Women became more self-aware, gradually shifting away from the softness and grace once valued in the old worldview, which emphasized &#8220;women dress to please others (\u5973\u4e3a\u60a6\u5df1\u8005\u5bb9)&#8221;, toward a posture that was taller, healthier, and bolder, embodying the style of &#8220;women dress for their happiness (\u5973\u4e3a\u5df1\u60a6\u8005\u5bb9)&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This period can be referred to as the &#8220;<strong>Wu Zetian Era<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It includes the time when Wu Zetian officially declared herself emperor, renamed the country to the Zhou dynasty (also known as Wu Zhou), and the period of &#8220;women leading the government.&#8221; It also covers the earlier period when Wu Zetian served as empress and empress dowager, as well as the time after her abdication when women like Princess Taiping, Shangguan Wan&#8217;er, and Empress Wei continued to participate in governance.<\/p>\n<p>This period lasted for about half a century. The fashion styles of this era can also be divided into four major periods of evolution based on the historical backdrop.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"gaozong\">The Reign of Emperor Gaozong of Tang (649\u2013663)<\/h4>\n<p>In the early years of Emperor Gaozong&#8217;s reign, the fashion and makeup styles for women continued the trends that had developed during the late Zhenguan (\u8d1e\u89c2 ; zh\u0113n gu\u00e0n) period of the early Tang dynasty, with a slim figure and attire featuring short sleeves and long skirts that rose high over the chest, covering the curves of the woman&#8217;s body in long dresses.<\/p>\n<p>However, facial makeup began to change, departing from the subtle style characteristic of the early Tang dynasty. During this time, the cheeks and areas around the eyes were heavily powdered with bright red, without the soft gradient that had previously been popular, making it more conspicuous and somewhat harsh.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps due to his dislike for this rigid and striking makeup style, Emperor Gaozong, in the first year of his reign (650), during a visit to the Ganye Temple to pray, met Wu Zetian again. By then, she had become a nun and no longer wore makeup, which rekindled his old feelings for her.<\/p>\n<p>(Wu Zetian (\u6b66\u5219\u5929 ; W\u01d4 Z\u00e9ti\u0101n) entered the palace at the age of 14 and became a concubine (\u624d\u4eba ; c\u00e1i r\u00e9n) to Emperor Taizong of the Tang dynasty (Li Shimin), with the title &#8220;Wu Mei&#8221; (\u6b66\u5a9a ; w\u01d4 m\u00e8i).<\/p>\n<p>After Li Shimin&#8217;s death, Wu Zetian entered the Ganye Temple as a nun. The underskirts worn became thinner, but not overly so.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, a new fashion emerged for long skirts made from a single-colored fabric sewn into six or eight pieces, referred to as &#8220;mixed-color skirts (\u6d51\u8272\u88d9 ; h\u00fan s\u00e8 q\u00fan)&#8221; in Tang historical records.<\/p>\n<p>These skirts were most commonly made in the very popular color of pomegranate red.<\/p>\n<p>While Wu Zetian was still a nun at the Ganye Temple, she wrote a romantic poem titled\u300a\u5982\u610f\u5a18\u300b(R\u00fa Y\u00ec Ni\u00e1ng) which she sent to Emperor Gaozong:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u770b\u6731\u6210\u78a7\u601d\u7eb7\u7eb7\uff0c<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u6194\u60b4\u652f\u79bb\u4e3a\u5fc6\u541b\u3002<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u4e0d\u4fe1\u6bd4\u6765\u957f\u4e0b\u6cea\uff0c<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u5f00\u7bb1\u9a8c\u53d6\u77f3\u69b4\u88d9\u3002<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Seeing the red turn to green, my mind is in turmoil,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Pale and tired, my body is drooping just to miss you.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>If you do not believe the tears that endlessly fall,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Open the coffin and see the pomegranate skirt I keep.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>During archaeological excavations of Tang Tomb No. 214 in Astana, a nearly perfectly preserved set of women&#8217;s clothing from this period was discovered. Compared to clay figurines whose colors had faded or wall paintings whose lines had blurred, this find was far more vivid, giving us a chance to revive the appearance of women from that time.<\/p>\n<p>According to the inscription on the tomb, the tomb&#8217;s owner was Qu Sheng (\u9eb9\u80dc ; Q\u016b Sh\u00e8ng), the wife of Zhang Jun (\u5f20\u541b ; Zh\u0101ng J\u016bn), a high-ranking Tang official from Xizhou, who died in the second year of the Linde reign under Emperor Gaozong (665) at the young age of 18.<\/p>\n<p>Although her life was short, the clothing and style she wore have been restored, allowing people today to see what she may have looked like, offering a glimpse of her enchanting appearance.<\/p>\n<p>The clothing worn by Qu Sheng displays extraordinary elegance:<\/p>\n<p>On her head, she wore a tall hairpin fashioned from hemp cloth wrapped into her hair, decorated with cloud patterns and cut paper ornaments. Long, solid-colored skirts with wide cuts were still in trend, and narrow under-skirts made of thin fabric were also still popular.<\/p>\n<p>Some statues even show women wearing outer skirts made from thin, blue-green fabric worn over inner skirts in red and yellow. In addition, there are several short garments made from brocade with short sleeves but without any trim at the lower edges (such as at the waist or the bottom of the skirt), or with only short trims. She even boldly incorporated elements of male attire into women&#8217;s fashion, including elements typically worn by male officials in the court or during large religious ceremonies.<\/p>\n<p>For example, at the Han-Tang Stone Carving Museum in Shaanxi, there is a stone tablet inscribed with the image &#8220;\u5927\u5510\u7687\u5e1d\u7687\u540e\u4f9b\u517b (d\u00e0 t\u00e1ng hu\u00e1ng d\u00ec hu\u00e1ng h\u00f2u g\u00f2ng y\u01ceng ; Emperor and Empress of the Tang Dynasty Offering Worship)&#8221;, which, after research, is believed to depict Emperor Zhongzong and Empress Wei.<\/p>\n<p>In the image, Empress Wei is adorned with accessories resembling an imperial crown, including hanging ornaments that resemble the emperor&#8217;s crown. Her clothing is decorated with patterns such as the sun, moon, and flying dragons\u2014motifs typically found in royal or imperial attire.
